On this companion to his book The Shamanic Drum,
Michael Drake instructs the listener in playing ten ceremonial
drum rhythms, including those for invoking the seven directions.
A 30 minute ceremonial drumming is also performed, which
listeners may use for prayer and journeywork. This CD can be used
independently or as an integral companion to the book.
Track 1: Introduction
Track 2: Go Away
This rhythm, like smudging with cedar, prepares sacred space by
clearing the area of stagnant or unwanted energy.
Track 3: Come To Me
Like smudging with sweetgrass, this rhythm attracts and draws in
helping spirits and beneficial energy.
Track 4: Upperworld - Eagle
The Eagle is the intercessor between humans and the upperworld.
This is a good rhythm for prayer and journeywork.
Track 5: East - Hummingbird
The Hummingbird is the Maya guardian of the east and sings a
vibration of pure joy and illumination.
Track 6: South - Coyote
The Coyote is a guardian of the south and brings us the medicine
of laughter and humor.
Track 7: West - Bear
The Bear is a guardian of the west and brings us the medicine of
introspection, healing, and transformation.
Track 8: North - Buffalo
The Buffalo is a guardian of the north and brings us the medicine
of wisdom, blessings, and abundance.
Track 9: Underworld - Horse
In the Mongolian shamanic tradition, the Horse is the guardian of
the underworld and carries power and healing to wherever it is
needed based on our intent.
Track 10: Center - Heartbeat
The Heartbeat is related to the seventh direction or center of
the medicine wheel. When we drum the heartbeat, we become
centered and united with all our relations.
Track 11: Earth/Eagle
The Earth/Eagle beat is used to end a ceremony and send out
prayers of thanks and gratitude to the seven directions and all
our relations.
Track 12: Prayer Round
The Prayer Round of a ceremonial drumming is projective in nature
and carries our intention and prayers into all realms of
existence.
Track 13: Healing Round
The Healing Round carries power and healing to wherever it is
needed based on our prayers and intent.
Track 14: Thank You Round
The Thank You Round carries our gratitude to all our relations
for the needs met.
Michael Drake is an internationally respected writer, rhythmist,
and shamanist. He is the author of The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to
Sacred Drumming and I Ching: The Tao of Drumming. His articles
have appeared in numerous publications, including Awareness,
Sacred Hoop, and Mother Earth News. Raised in a conservative
Southern Baptist Church, Michael had his first ecstatic
experience as a youth at a church revival; an evangelistic
meeting intended to reawaken interest in religion. This state of
rapture and trancelike elation inspired his spiritual quest.
Michael spent more than 30 years of his life seeking answers to
some of life's most perplexing mysteries: Why am I here? What
happens when you die? What is life's purpose? He explored the
world's great religions. He considered the philosophies of
humanity. He studied the theories of modern science. At a crucial
point in his search, Michael came in touch with the transforming
power of shamanic drumming and of an ancient shamanic way of
self-knowledge. Under the tutelage of Mongolian shaman Jade
Wah'oo Grigori, he learned the healing rhythms and drum ways of
an ancient shamanic lineage. He discovered that therapeutic
rhythm techniques have been used for thousands of years to create
and maintain physical, mental, and spiritual . Inspired by
his studies, research, and experiences, Michael founded Talking
Drum Publications in 1991 in order to publish information related
to shamanic drumming. For the past 20 years he has been
facilitating drum circles and workshops nationwide. To learn
